TRIUMPH -- 1963 - December

GRACE  AND  GLAD  TIDINGS  TO  YOUR  FAMILY

AT  THIS

CHRISTMAS

SEASON

FROM THE GORDON FAMILY!

THE  CHRISTMAS  STORY

Angels, from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye, who sang creation's story, Now proclaim Messiah's birth.

Shepherds, in the field abiding, Watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing, Yonder shines the Infant-Light.

Sages, leave your contemplations, Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of nations, Ye have seen His natal star.

Saints, before the altar bending, Watching long in hope and fear,
Suddenly the Lord, descending, In His temple shall appear;

                Come and worship, come and worship,
                Worship Christ, the new-born King.

-- James Montgomery

    For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
    For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.   -- John 3:16,17
    In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
    The same was in the beginning with God.
    All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.
    In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
    And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
    There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
    The same came for a witness to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
    He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
    That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

    And he said, it is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel:  I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. -- Isaiah 49:6

    He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
     He came unto his own, and his own received him not.
    But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
    Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
    And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth -- John 1:1-14

    And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:  God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. -- I Timothy 3:16

    And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, names Nazareth.
   To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
    And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee:  blessed art thou among women.
    And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
    And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
    And, behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name Jesus.

    Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.  -- Isaiah 7:14

    But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.  -- Galatians 4:4

    He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

    And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies.  Also the Lord telleth thee that he will make thee a house.
    And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.  -- 2 Samuel 7:11,12

    The Lord hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.  -- Psalm 132:11

    For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given:  and the government shall be upon his shoulder:  and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
    Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth for ever.  The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.  __ Isaiah 9:6,7

   And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
    Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
    And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:  therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
    And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
     For with God nothing shall be impossible.
    And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.  And the angel departed from her.
-- Luke 1:26-38

*****

It came upon the midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth
To touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, goodwill to men,
From heav'n's all-gracious King:"
The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.

Still thro' the cloven skies they come,
With peaceful wings unfurled,
And still their heav'nly music floats
O'er all the weary world:
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hov'ring wing:
And ever o'er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing.

And ye, beneath life's crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who tell along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow,
Look now! for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing;
O rest beside the weary road,
And hear the angels sing.

For lo, the days are hast'ning on,
By prophet bards foretold,
When with the evercircling years
Comes round the age of gold;
When peace shall over all the earth
Its ancient splendors fling
And the whole world give back the song
Which now the angels sing.

    And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
    And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
   And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
   And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
    And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
    For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
   And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
    And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
    And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
   For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden:  for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
    For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
  And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
    He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
    He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
   He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
    He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,
    As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
    And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.  -- Luke 1:39-56

   Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise:  When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
   Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
    But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
    And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS:  for he shall save his people from their sins.

    The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.
-- Genesis 49:10

    Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
    Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
    Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:
    And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son:  and he called his name JESUS.  -- Matthew 1:18-25

    And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.
    (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria).
    And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
    And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David,)
    To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
  And so it was, that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
    And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.  -- Luke 2:1-7

*****

I kept an inn in Bethlehem,
Oh, long and long ago!
I told them that there was no room
But how was I to know

The Lord of Glory had no place
To lay His gentle head?
I am a weary old man now,
And soon I shall be dead;

And I shall stand before His throne,
And will He say to me,
"I have no room for thee because
Thou hadst no room for Me?"

-- Martha Snell Nicholson

Thou didst leave Thy throne
And Thy kingly crown
When Thou camest to earth for me;
But in Bethlehem's home
Was there found no room
For Thy holy nativity.

Heaven's arches rang
When the angels sang.
Proclaiming Thy royal degree;
But of lowly birth
Didst Thou come to earth,
And in greatest humility.

The foxes found rest,
And the birds their nest
In the shade of the forest tree;
But Thy couch was the sod,
O Thou Son of God,
In the deserts of Galilee.

Thou camest, O Lord
With the living word
That should set Thy people free;
But with mocking scorn,
And with crown of thorn,
They bore Thee to Calvary:

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
There is room in my heart for Thee.

When the heavens shall ring,
And the angels sing,
At Thy coming to victory,
Let Thy voice call me home,
Saying, "Yet there is room,
There is room at My side for thee:"

My heart shall rejoice, Lord Jesus,
When Thou comest and callest for me.

    And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
    And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid.
   And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
    For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

    In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.
    Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.  -- I John 4:9,10

    And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
    And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly host praising God, and saying,
    Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
    And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
    And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
    And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
    And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
    But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
    And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
-- Luke 2:8-20

While shepherds watched their flocks by night,
All seated on the ground,
The angel of the Lord came down,
And glory shone around.

"Fear not!" said he; for mighty dread
Had seized their troubled mind,
"Glad tidings of great joy I bring,
To you and all mankind.

"To you, in David's town, this day
Is born, of David's line,
The Saviour, who is Christ the Lord;
And this shall be the sign:

"All glory be to God on high,
And to the earth be peace:
Goodwill henceforth from heav'n to men,
Begin and never cease!"

God rest you merry, gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay,
Remember Christ our Saviour
Was born on Christmas Day,
To save us all from Satan's pow'r
When we were gone astray;

From God our Heavenly Father,
A blessed Angel came;
And unto certain Shepherds
Bro't tidings of the same:
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.

"Fear not then," said the Angel
"Let nothing you affright,
This day is born a Saviour
Of a pure Virgin bright,
To free all those who trust in Him
From Satan's pow'r and might."

The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks afeeding,
In tempest, storm, and wind:
And went to Bethlehem straightway,
The Son of God to find.

And when they came to Bethlehem
Where our dear Saviour lay,
They found Him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;
His Mother Mary kneeling down,
Unto the Lord did pray.

    And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
    And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
    (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
    And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord.  A pair of turtle-doves, or two young pigeons.

    And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering:  and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.  -- Leviticus 12:8

   And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.
    And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
    And he came by the Spirit into the temple:  and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,
    Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
   Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
    For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
    Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
    A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

    The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light:  they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined  -- Isaiah 9:2

    I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles.  -- Isaiah 42:6

    Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.
   For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people:  but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
   And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.  -- Isaiah 60: 1-3

   And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him.
    And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against;

    And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.  -- Isaiah 8:14

    And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.  -- Matthew 21:44

    But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
    But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.  -- I Corinthians 1:23,24

    (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also;) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
    And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser:  she was of great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity;
    And she was a widow of about four-score years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.
    And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.  -- Luke 2:21-38

O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by;
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary;
And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wond'ring love.
O morning stars, together
Proclaim the holy birth,
And praises sing to God the King,
And peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently
The wondrous gift is giv'n!
So God imparts to human hearts
The blessings of His heav'n.
No ear may hear His coming;
But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him still,
The dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,
Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in,
-- Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell,
-- O come to us, abide with us,
Our Lord Emmanuel!

-- Phillips Brooks

    Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
    Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews?  for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
    When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
    And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
    And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judea:  for thus it is written by the prophet,
    And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda:  for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

    But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.  -- Micah 5:2

    Hath not the Scripture said, that Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?  -- John 7:42

    Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
    And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
   When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
    When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
   And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him:  and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
    And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.  -- Matthew 2:1-12

*****

The first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the east beyond them far,
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.

And by the light of that same star,
Three wisemen came from country far;
To seek for a king was their intent,
And to follow the star wherever it went.

This star drew nigh to the north-west,
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest,
And there it did both stop and stay,
Right over the place where Jesus lay.

Then entered in those wisemen three,
Full reverently upon the knee,
And offered there, in His presence,
Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense.

Hark! The herald angels sing,
"Glory to the new-born King;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild;
God and sinners reconciled."
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th' angelic hosts proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem."

Christ, by highest heaven adored;
Christ, the everlasting Lord:
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the God-head see,
Hail th' incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with men t'appear,
Jesus our Immanuel here.

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings;
Mild He lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of earth;
Born to give them second birth.

Come, Desire of nations, come!
Fix in us Thy humble home:
Rise, the woman's conquering seed,
Bruise in us the serpent's head;
Adam's likeness now efface,
Stamp Thine image in its place:
Second Adam from above,
Reinstate us in Thy love.

Have you any room for Jesus,
He who bore your load of sin?
As He knocks and asks admission,
Sinner, will you let Him in?

Room for pleasure, room for business,
But for Christ the Crucified,
Not a place that He can enter,
In the heart for which He died?

Have you any room for Jesus,
As in grace He calls again?
O today is time accepted,
Tomorrow you may call in vain.

Room and time now give to Jesus,
Soon will pass God's day of grace;
Soon thy heart left cold and silent,
And thy Savior's pleading cease.

Room for Jesus, King of glory!
Hasten now His word obey;
Swing the heart's door widely open,
Bid Him enter while you may.
